Jennifer Hudson plus no more

A Celeb I admire, (and no it’s not because she lost so much weight–I actually think some people look better with a little extra on them).

Any celeb gossip is retold from the press, from hearsay–as I am not in with that crowd–nor would I want to be I know I couldn’t handle the press. But even so people are people and can be relateable in one way or another. A little less than a month ago I saw a MTV special on Jennifer Hudson.

I’m going to go on a side note for a second, but return promptly to her story–this aside still relates to my little bit about her. Growing up many of us have heard that size matters in one way or another: that skinny is beautiful, that as women we should be thinner, or some variation of this. Some of us were fortunate to have mothers and other support systems that loved us as we were, no matter what we were. However, there has been this kind of exclusionary practices embraced by those of us in the plus size community. I’m also guilty of this, and I think part of it may be curving out the politics of identity and being inclusive makes it harder to sustain that line. The line that says–we are a distinct group, and we are important for such and such reasons.

This is where Miss Hudson comes in on two distinct levels that come to mind right now. In the press she has been getting a lot of coverage on her recent weight loss. From the mainstream media it has come with all kinds of praise, and from the plus media a kind of scorn that she is now too skinny. At first I was kind of siding with the latter camp, I wont deny it. But then I saw that story on her life–and I realized how petty I was being.

Sometimes in trying to make oneself and others that are plus feel proud of being curvier, more luscious, and voluptuously fine– I became literally wrapped up in it. I mean any time I do a celeb dish I’m operating off a very limited amount of information. But the documentary on her life showed me how much adversity she’s been through. I mean really difficult trials, that most of us are fortunate enough to never have to face. We all go through hard times–but senseless murder of our family members is hopefully not something many of us must face. Yet, here is Jennifer Hudson–she mourned, but she also continues to sing. I could just see that she’s faced the losses in the best way that anyone can. She still remembers and pays honor to those that have gone, through her life with music and her new life as a mother.

It was really beautiful to see, and just reminded me not to be so petty–that there really is more to life than this. That we can all find a reason to smile. And really truly, whatever is going on inside is infinitely more important than what we have going on on the outside.

To Jennifer Hudson, who I now think of as a great role model–who looks effervescent no matter what size she is. What a dream-girl.via
